St. Augustine – May 15, 2016

We took a student-guided tour of Flagler College, a four-year liberal arts college founded in 1968.  Formerly Henry Flagler’s Hotel Ponce de Leon, construction began in 1886 and was completed in 1888; Architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings were the designers, contractors James McGuire and Joseph McDonald were former New England shipbuilders and completed construction in less than two years.  The interior windows were by Tiffany, murals by George Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti, and lighting by Thomas Edison, a good friend of Henry Flagler.
In the pictures below, it appears we walked through the tour with our eyes on the ceiling — the photos do not fully exhibit the magnificence of the rooms we were permitted to view.

The above six photos were taken in the student dining hall.

Entering the ladies lounge area of the hotel.  Guests would stay at the hotel through the winter; it was not
open for shorter stays, although there were a few exceptions.  Among the notable guests were Samuel Clemens, Joseph Pulitzer, Henry James, Thornton Wilder, and five U.S. Presidents, the last being Lyndon Johnson, who visited in 1963
(he was Vice-President at the time).

These last two photos were taken in the main entrance.
