Cumberland Island – May 23 (following Fernandina Beach)

We arrived at Cumberland Island mid-afternoon, and we soon wished we could linger here for longer than an overnight stay.  Since our time was limited, we quickly dinghied to shore from our anchorage off the Sea Camp docks.  Trails on the island will take you to the ocean, campsites, and several historic districts which include remains of homes and mansions from the late 1700’s and 1800’s ( James Oglethorpe, Geo.Washington’s Gen. Greene, and Thomas Carnegie and his wife were among some of the residents here).  We will have to see these historic sites on a future visit – for now, we have to get as far north as possible and reserve a dock for the Memorial Day weekend, since a tropical system is in the weather forecast.

The beginning of our trail to the beach.

We soon came upon this Armadillo having an early dinner.  Someone with local knowledge told us that among their favorite bugs are grubs and fire ants.

It was difficult to get a good picture of this enormous sand dune, which is visible in this shot thanks to the vegetation growing at the top.  We took the path and bridge alongside it to get to the beach.

Beautiful sugar sand.

We lost track of time while walking and wading in the ocean and did not get back to the boat until 7 pm.

Walking back up the dunes . . .

. . . and back down.

An exceptionally calm anchorage.

The sun’s down.

It was a beautiful night for star gazing.
