Key West – March 1 – 3

Breakfast by the Koi pond at Kermit’s is a peaceful way to start the day.

The breakfast special gives you more than what’s stated on the menu –> eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, fresh fruit, plus juice – but no Cafe con Leche today (the espresso machine was broken).  Good thing we have a large day of biking ahead!
The Tennessee Williams Museum looks small from the street, but it is filled with exhibits and pictures to keep you there for a couple of hours.
His life’s experiences provided plenty to draw from in his work
A model of his Key West home, which we’ll go see tomorrow (it is now a private residence, so we will view from the street)

Leaving the museum, we were craving that missing Cafe con Leche, so we stopped by the Cuban Coffee Queen cabana, then went over to the bookstore, where we found the “local” section with books written by some of the main characters in William McKeen’s book, “Mile Marker Zero.”  We were also quite happy to find (and purchase) a signed copy of Tom Corcoran’s “Key West in Black and White.”

Moving on from the bookstore, we continued our cycling and took a break to watch the cruise ship leave the dock.

Back to the boat, a swim, change of clothes, then we walked over to the “Smokin’ Tuna Saloon” to hear Marjory Lee, except she wasn’t there!  (so much for the accuracy of websites)  Still, however, we gave a listen to Nick Brownell, who just got better with each song, so we stayed for drinks and appetizers.  We’ll track Marjory down before we leave, because we’d like to hear her again after catching a couple of her songs several days ago at the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon.

Guess what? We’re still hungry, so we walked over to Onlywood for dinner (I really think this is our favorite restaurant in Key West), then back to the boat. 6.1 miles today, biking and walking.

Monday, March 2, windy with clouds in the sky, but still good for biking and exploring, so off we headed for Duncan Street to see Tennessee Williams’ former home. It was heartening to see how well-kept it looks. I read that there was an effort awhile back to purchase the home and keep it as a landmark, but it did not come to fruition. That aside, it is now worth over $2M.

Since the beach is close by, we pedaled over to look at the sea conditions, given our approaching departure date. Waves were crashing over the end of the White Street Pier as well as at the marine park next to Louie’s Backyard, where we stopped for a while.

Taken from the back deck at Louie’s – glad we’re not leaving for a few more days, so the seas can calm down
We stopped for Sunset Celebration and met a couple from NC – he grew up boating on Pamlico Sound and Adams Creek, and she is from Raleigh. Still a very small world!!
On to The Chart Room
The place is tiny and was as crowded that night as a place that size could get- a hotel room converted to a bar back in the 60’s, and it didn’t look like much has changed. We sat at this old table (#5 on the picture below) and thought of Buffett, Jerry Jeff Walker, Hunter Thompson, Tom Corcoran, Tom McGuane, and the shenanigans that went on here.  We did not stay long, with a small glass of house wine (CK Mondavi) and a “well” rum & coke coming to $19 – at least at the Sunset Deck they pour Kendall Jackson and Mt. Gay for that same price!

Moving on, we walked over to the Sunset Pier to find out their music schedule for the coming week, then went back to the boat for a quick dinner (leftover sauce and bread from Onlywood, with gnocchi and salad). Just 4.6 miles today.

Yes, that’s a dog in that backpack – a golden retriever!!

Tuesday, March 3 – shopping day for Marty, while Doug took care of some boat chores. It was a hot and muggy day, so the afternoon was spent in the pool!

Seen while walking along Caroline St.
The Captain just can’t get enough of these cruise ships!
A spectacular sunset tonight! Then on to Pepe’s for dinner.
Posted alongside the restaurant’s entrance.

    1. oh, yeah – I forgot to mention we were wearing hazmat suits! Seriously, we are pretty much done with sightseeing and public places. I told Doug we are keeping a very low profile as we head home. I’ve seen enough for now. You and Kathy stay safe and be careful! xo
