Crescent Lake to Eastport & Finding Puffins – 5/21-23
On our last full day at Crescent Lake, we took a walk on the trail that encircles the Lake (we went as far as the bridge that crosses to the other shore).
This is a man-made “Cressie”, named after Nessie the Loch Ness monster. Cressie is said to live in Crescent Lake, and she was first spotted in the 1950’s. According to an archivist at Memorial University’s folklore and language archive, the creature is still regularly seen. “It might be an oversized eel,” she said. 🙂Despite the cold, these little flowers were scattered throughout the campground and appeared everywhere along the roadside. They don’t look like the dandelions I’m familiar with – an online search led me to suspect they are Yellow Hawkweed. Whatever they are, they’re a definite sign of spring in these northern parts. Our last campfire. The campground owners give every new visitor this box filled with dry wood!So you get an idea of where we’ve been, I put post-its as identifiers: we arrived on the southwest tip of the island, stayed 2 nights in Codroy (#1), stayed 3 nights at Crescent Lake (#2 on the map) and took a day trip to see icebergs farther north; we arrived in Eastport yesterday afternoon (#3), and we took a day trip today to see Puffins (far east on the map in the town of Elliston). Below are a couple of frequently seen sights (along with clotheslines full of clean laundry – not pictured). These adorable school bus sheds keep the children warm while they wait for the bus. Each one is brightly painted, and many are whimsically decorated.Oh, yes – these are everywhere. He took his time crossing the road. These are everywhere in Elliston. When we started out from Eastport this morning, they were having snow showers in Elliston. The wind chill NOW (6:30 pm, after an afternoon of sunshine) is 29 degrees Fahrenheit, and the winds are NNE at 17 mph. It was very cold today! Here they are!Zooming in for a closer look …and, this enlargement – they even look cute when they’re a bit out of focus. 🙂
(and, as I said, it was VERY cold today)Cape Bonavista Lighthouse On the way back to our campers, we saw an Iceberg! What a great day!
Love the pictures of the cliffs against the ocean and rocky beach. I can’t imagine how cold that water must be! So glad you got to see the puffins in all their glory.

Us, too, though a day in the 70’s with no wind would have allowed us to linger and get more pix. 🙂 Yes, those cliffs are impressive! XO

This was my favorite campsite of all that we’ve been to in the past two + years (13 states, 3 provinces). Thanks for taking a peek at our travels. XO
