Sightseeing, Quebec Environs – 7/6

We had a large day planned, starting with a visit to the Basilica of Sainte Anne-de-Beaupre.

The front entrance was under construction/maintenance, so we were not able to get a good photo of the facade.
In 1658, two acres were donated to the Catholic Church for a chapel to be built. The first of many reported miracles occurred during the construction. In 1876, the Basilica opened for worship; destroyed by fire in 1922, it reopened in 1946.
Using a side entrance, we first visited the Blessed Sacrament Chapel
Chapel of the Immaculate Conception
Saint Anne is a patron saint to many, including sailors.
We were able to join part of the 11 a.m. mass, in French, of course.
There is another bank of confessionals on the other side of the sanctuary.
Representations of the many miraculous healings that have reportedly taken place since 1876
Suggested donations are not-so-subtle, spoiling the spiritual experience (we felt).

Our next stop was Ile d’Orleans.
(For lunch, of course!)
Our table had a beautiful view of the
St. Lawrence River.
The island is full of vineyards, farmlands, spectacular and charming homes, and specialty shops. We stopped at a chocolatier as well as this fromagerie, which changed my opinion of goat cheese. We purchased one wedge of cheese plus a vanilla ice cream cone made with goat’s milk for Doug. Delicious!
Driving from the island, we could see Montmorency Falls.
We settled for seeing the falls from a distance since it was getting close to 5 pm, and we didn’t want to deal with rush-hour traffic.
