We left Solomons and sailed back to the eastern shore to Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield, MD.
We wanted to visit Diane and Bob, friends we met while cruising in the Keys two years ago who retired to the eastern shore at approximately the same time we retired to New Bern. We had a
wonderful visit – – Diane and Bob stopped by shortly after we tied up our boat and invited us to their home for dinner the following evening. They live in a historic neighborhood in Crisfield in a 100-year-old home which they now have up for sale, as they plan to move aboard their boat and cruise for the next few years. We rode around Crisfield for a mini-tour and stopped in the Smith Island Baking Company, which recently moved from Smith Island to downtown Crisfield. We also saw homes that were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy and are just now being renovated/rebuilt to meet new code standards – – 6 years later! Fortunately, our friends had no damage to their home. Diane prepared a fabulous meal for us — from appetizers to dessert, which we ended up taking over to our boat to enjoy because their real estate agent had a last-minute request from a client to view their home. We scrambled around to get dishes cleaned up and the kitchen in order, then went over to our boat for Diane’s delicious peach cobbler and a beautiful sunset.
Somers Cove Marina lived up to its reputation as a full-service facility, with competent and helpful staff, a much-needed swimming pool, updated bathrooms and showers, an excellent laundry facility, and a courtesy van to take boaters on errands or reprovisioning trips to the grocery. We were extremely grateful for the courtesy van — we could have walked to the store had the weather been a bit cooler — on that particular day, the marina’s weather station registered a heat index of 120 degrees!
