Deltaville to St. Mary’s – 5/18-5/22

Not-to-be missed while in Deltaville is a trip to the J&W Seafood Market.  Our plan was to take our bicycles over to the public dock, but a “dry run” over there the night before showed us the near impossibility of getting the bikes up to and over the rail on the dock.  So, we put on our walking shoes and headed up Lover’s Lane toward the General Puller Highway.  A few minutes into our trek, a very nice lady was driving from her waterfront house and asked if we needed a ride (she even threw our trash in her trunk, since she was headed to the dump).   Formerly from the Raleigh area, she and her husband were sailors who transitioned to a trawler, though now he is recovering from a stroke so boating isn’t part of their lives.  She dropped us off at the market, returned from her errand, and brought us back to the public dock with our seafood goods – fresh halibut, shrimp, cod, salads, and a small thank-you gift to this lovely woman who turned our day into a “feel good” Saturday by her kindness.  Needless to say, we had two fabulous dinners to look forward to.

We left Deltaville on Sunday morning, quite a different kind of start to the day from Saturday, with Marty running us onto a sandbar.  Thankfully, no damage besides coffee spilled everywhere.  And, yes, there was an audience, since this happened right off of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club whose members were getting ready for a race.  I heard no applause.

20190520_201033A beautiful day with good wind got us up the Potomac River and into the St. Mary’s River, where we anchored in Horseshoe Bend right off of St. Mary’s College.  This is one of our favorite places in this area.  We took our dinghy over to the campus dock and toured the beautiful campus on Monday and Historic St. Mary’s City on Tuesday.  The colony of Maryland was settled in 1634 – the picture below shows the white cross on the shore at Church Point, the original site of the settlement.

We plan to leave on Wednesday after the gale force winds subside out on Chesapeake Bay.

  1. Hmmmmmmm, “Marty ran us onto a sand bar”….so if she was driving, apparently YOU were navigating which makes it your fault. Can you tell I live with a woman? 😉
