After a large (and delicious) breakfast in the beautiful, wooden-beamed St. Mary’s College dining hall, we walked back in time to the 1600’s, first stopping at the Maryland Dove, a tall ship similar to the one that brought settlers from England – hard to believe how everyone survived the journey in such cramped quarters.
We walked on paths surrounded by native plants and lush greenery, seeing Smith’s Ordinary (the 1600’s version of a motel), the Van Sweringen Inn, the Yaocomaco Indian hamlet, and the reconstructed Chapel which is built on the foundation of the original 17th century church. Inside the chapel are the caskets of Philip Calvert, his first wife Anne, and an infant son. The chapel commemorates the founding of Catholicism in British North America. During a previous visit, we saw several archaeological “digs” in progress – excavations are ongoing on the city grounds.
Amazing travels! Looks beautiful!
