Marathon Update – 3/22/20

Things seem to change hour-by-hour, but what we know tonight is we will be able to stay here for what remains of our month’s reservation (27 days, I believe), no one is being told they must leave this marina, though they are not accepting new reservations. The fuel dock is open, as it serves several commercial fishing vessels and is, therefore, an essential business. The restaurant is open for take-out (no seating), as are the laundry room and restrooms. Ice will not be delivered, but the restaurant has ice-making capability and will supply the marina.

The gate, normally open until 5 pm, has been closed for several days, so no outsiders can wander in. Nearby Sombrero beach is closed, and all marinas and boat ramps in Miami-Dade County are closed. The Florida Keys are now closed to visitors, and the rumor we heard today is the Florida border will close Monday night. With things changing frequently, we’ll see if that actually happens.

We feel as safe as possible here in this marina. The facilities are immaculate and my eyes actually sting from the chlorine used in cleaning the restrooms (YES, we are using them because we have a limited supply of our own toilet paper on board). So, we feel fortunate to be able to enjoy nature, go for dinghy rides in the salty air, and try not to stress out about how and when to get home. All I want is continued good health for ourselves, our family, and friends.

  1. Amen! We’re thinking (worrying) about you every day. If you can wait it out safely in a piece of paradise, I guess that’s as good as you can hope for.
