Raccoon Island, Church Creek, & Charleston – 5/24, 5/25, & 5/26-27

On Sunday morning, we said good-bye to beautiful Windmill Harbour and their wonderful dockmaster, Jake, and put down our anchor off of Raccoon Island 49 miles later. Getting through the shallow waters of the Ashepoo Coosaw Cutoff was a slow but steady process, with the shallowest water being 6.6′ on a rising tide.

Shallow-draft boats don’t need to inch along

On Memorial Day we had an easy day – just 22 miles to our anchorage at Church Creek. On Tuesday morning, we were underway by 6:30 a.m. in order to get through the Elliott Cut before Ebb Tide, make the 9:30 a.m. opening of the Wappoo Creek Bridge, then dock at Charleston City Marina for two nights while waiting out weather.

Some docks in South Carolina need to be very long to accommodate the tidal fluctuations

Steady rain made for a very wet passage from Church Creek to Charleston, but at least it wasn’t freezing cold. We were worried that Coronavirus concerns might be lessened in the City of Charleston, since South Carolina “opened up” earlier than other states, but that is clearly not the case here at the marina. We’re very happy about that, though we’ll not be getting off of our boat very much, anyway, especially with the weather forecast: wind gusts in the high 20’s this afternoon and tonight, then more rain tomorrow.

  1. Glad to see you safe and sound in Charleston. It’s also clear I’m not smart enough to navigate and time ICW waters with any boat bigger than what we had πŸ˜‰

    1. The first fellow boater we encountered put his on as we approached, wearing ours from Marathon Marina (so very glad to have them). As for the ICW, electronics are literally a lifesaver! Doug uses four apps when navigating and at least three weather apps, two radios are tuned to two separate channels, and he never depends solely on autopilot – no wonder he’s pooped when we get into port! 😊
