Isle of Palms – 5/28, 29 & 30

The weather was favorable on Thursday 5/28, so we left Charleston and headed to Isle of Palms – not a great distance, but we’ll now be able to get to Georgetown on Saturday before that marina closes (we’ll need to leave at 6:30 a.m., but that’s OK).

We anticipated (dreaded) the crowds we remembered from our stay at Isle of Palms four years ago; I said, “No problem, we just won’t get off the boat.” When we pulled up to the fuel dock yesterday, the staff was efficient, helpful, courteous, and took care of our needs then quickly got us tied up to our dock in a gated section of the marina. The restaurant/night spot we remembered from years ago is no longer in business, so no crowds to worry about there, but it is very busy at the boat launch and the marina market.

As long as we get to Georgetown tomorrow (Saturday), we should be back in New Bern next Friday. We’ll keep checking tomorrow’s weather – right now there’s an 80% chance of rain.

Well, the best laid plans …. We were up at 6 a.m., but did not go to Georgetown on the 30th as planned, because Saturday’s forecast called for a 95% chance of severe thunderstorms with hail. We waited an hour or two, the forecast remained the same, so Doug went to the fuel dock and signed us up for another night. Sure enough, as the day progressed, the chance of thunderstorms became much less in Georgetown and increased significantly at Isle of Palms. Then came the phone call from the harbormaster in Georgetown wondering where we were! I explained that I had called earlier to reschedule our reservation, but apparently the young lady I spoke to forgot to make the change. Frustrated – yes!!

  2. Glad you finally have New Bern in your itinerary! We are planning to open just the Gardens at the Palace on Tuesday, June 2. We’ve been closed to the public since March 18! I am going to work more hours, teleworking less! Take care & safe travels the rest of the way home!
