Kentucky to Chicago – Oct. 17-21

Camping in Kentucky was a bit of glamping, with a sturdy hardwood deck overlooking the Kentucky River. A metal firepit with lid and log-turner was part of the furnishings, which also included a table, chairs, deck lighting, and logs. This portion of the river winds through two large hills, making for pretty scenery but impossible cell phone reception. What follows below shows some of our day trips during our stay there.

Lunch at Wallace Station Deli and Bakery, in Versailles, KY. Highly recommended by friends Dick and Sharon, it lived up to their rave reviews.
We discovered that the majority of distilleries on The Bourbon Trail are only open during the latter half of the week. No matter, really – we enjoyed the beautiful drive through limestone hills and alongside spectacular horse farms.
Castle and Key Distillery, in the former
Old Taylor space.
What a discovery – by accident !
This libation was enjoyed by a few family members who would be well over 100 years young were they still with us today.
The door to the tasting room was open, so we stepped in, just long enough to snap this shot before the proprietor appeared to let us know we were not welcome right then, but could return at 4 pm if we wished.
It’s not a very welcoming facade, anyway ….
We found a warm welcome and hospitable biermeister at The Blue Stallion, where we enjoyed a flight and his stories of the brewery’s success.
While this photo makes the glasses look large, we were told that by law they can only hold between 4-5 ounces (the four glasses combined would equal approximately
one pint). We shared one “flight” between the two of us, and there was usually one brew we did not like, so it was left behind.
Day #2 of exploring and getting our “passports” stamped on The Brewgrass Trail.
At Versailles Brewing Company.
THE best pretzel we’ve ever had!
