Kentucky Horse Park – Oct. 26-28

After an overnight stop on Monday in Crawfordsville, IN, we arrived at the beautifully maintained Kentucky Horse Park campground in Lexington. If there is such a thing as “refined” camping, it happens here. We set up our bikes in preparation for touring the grounds of the park side of the property on Wednesday – combined with the campground, the complex encompasses 1,200+ acres.

We took the bike path from the campground (shown in the upper right-hand corner of the map), past the pond and racetrack (upper center of map), and parked in front of the Visitors Center (dark blue “square” with white lettering). For those who would like a true workout, there is a bike path that takes you into downtown Lexington.

After paying the admission ($16 pp/senior rate), we hurried over to catch the complimentary horse-drawn carriage tour of the grounds.

After our tour, ready to take another group. Below are two pix taken inside The Big Barn.
The Horse Park has their own police force comprised of equine and automobile patrol.

We were introduced to two champion horses, Go For Gin (1994 Kentucky Derby Winner)
… and Funny Cide (2003 Kentucky Derby Winner), owned by Sakatoga (owners from Sacketts Harbor + Saratoga) Stable
We walked through the 60,000 sq. ft. Smithsonian-affiliated museum. We took dozens of pictures – too many to put in this blog – below are some highlights
This coach belonged to Mrs. Edward McDowell, wife of the composer whose
music I played years ago.
Time to leave the museum and see a little more of the grounds before returning to the campground.
This horse was a Marine. His story is below.
Some horses have their final resting place here.
