Elton John – April 9, 2022

He’s 75 and still incredible! Strong voice, strong hands! Our long wait for this concert was worth it, as was the splurge on tickets back in January 2000. Our seats were dead-center to the stage among the crowd of 16,000, with a great view of the band and the jumbo video screen behind and above the stage, showing Elton and his band mates up close, as well as images of “everyday” people along with stars pertinent to each song. Special effects did not overwhelm the music – while the focus was on Elton, he took time to engage with the audience and shared stories, reminiscing about pivotal points in his 52-year career. Opening up the concert with “Bennie and the Jets” absolutely made my night! The song list included the old favorites along with his newest duet with Dua Lipa, who was featured via video screen. His band was outstanding – how could it be otherwise, with three of the six being original members (Nigel Olsson, David Johnstone, and Ray Cooper). After two hours and twenty minutes (with a few very brief breaks), the encore performance ended with Elton “floating” towards the rear of the stage at the end of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and through a small door in the blackened background.
