Searching for Icebergs

Our friendly and helpful camping neighbors put out a few calls to friends in the area to see where there might be an iceberg or two. The possible locations were Brent’s Cove and Harbor Round, so the four of us hopped in our truck and headed to the northeast corner of the Baie Verte Peninsula.

Along the way, there were three moose sightings: Dick saw one by a lake, we all saw this guy, and a third was leisurely crossing the road. Pretty exciting!
It’s incredible how they virtually disappear once they’re into the brush – they blend right into their surroundings.
At Brent’s Cove, we mostly saw iceberg fragments floating in the harbor.
There *were* icebergs out there … WAY out there!
A bit discouraged, we drove over to Harbour Round, and as we came over a hill, we saw this!
A zoom photo – now THIS is what we came here for!
Fishermen were nearby, and we struck up a conversation with one of them. He said that particular iceberg was “grounded” out there – sometimes they can block the harbor, resulting in a day’s loss of income (or more). The captain and crew of this boat were going out to catch snow crab. Each one of the baskets shown in the picture cost $65, and the fisherman we were talking to owns around 400; his license allows him to fill 200 at a time. He’s just one of a few who hope the captain returns with a full load.
Driving around, we saw lots of iceberg fragments – such a beautiful shade of blue!

We needed some lunch, so we went in search of a place to eat – easier said than done!

We ended up in the town of La Cie. Unfortunately, this place was not yet open for the season
We ended up here and enjoyed sandwiches, burgers, and homemade chicken soup.
The view from our lunch table. After lunch, we headed back to our campground – a two-hour drive. Next in our travels, we hope to see a Puffin or two.

    1. Yes, it was! We’ve eaten a lot of root vegetables up here, and there were plenty of them in the soup, as well as chunks of chicken. 🙂
