Hiking in Salvage, More Icebergs in Twillingate – 5/24, 25

The weather has been very fickle – fortunately, we’ve seemed to time our activities fairly well.

Doug found a nice day hike on the All Trails app. He chose the Coastal Ridge Trail, which is part of the Damnable Trail, a series of challenging trails along the coast. The portion we hiked, through the village of Salvage and along the coast, was rated easy but was challenging enough for me!
We found a couple of stories explaining the bell (see photo above); the most logical to us tells of a pirate ship in this region which was captured by the British when its bell was accidentally rung, giving away its location (thus, “Damn the Bell” morphing into “Damnable”).
A short walk through the village led to a less inhabited portion of the trail
Spring hasn’t yet “sprung” around here, but these buds look ready to open soon.
We continued on the trail to Doctor’s Pond
Portions of the trail were beautifully upgraded from rugged to comfortable
(and safe)
We made it to Doctor’s Pond
This is a somewhat rugged part of the trail
Looking upward from the trail
Hmmm, what do we see up ahead?
His safe place is the wooded area on the left, which two more rabbits occupied
He sure is tame! We suspect people on the trail must feed him. He’s out of luck with us, though – we’re only out for a short hike.
Our new friend
We came across this old cemetery
Most of the dates on the headstones were around the mid-1800’s
Doug walked up the hill to get this shot
Down the trail we went
Back to sea level. 2.2 miles. Such a gorgeous day!

On Thursday, we made the two-hour drive to Twillingate in search of more icebergs. There were many that were so close to shore that we considered taking a boat tour for a close-up look; however, the boat was an open Zodiac (i.e., an extra-large dinghy), temperatures were in the low 40’s, and it was windy. Even though the boat rental service said they’d give us suits to keep us warm, we didn’t think we wanted to pay $160 and risk being freezing cold. In looking at the pictures we took from shore, I think we did pretty well while staying warm. πŸ™‚

On the road again
We all thought this looked like a boat on the water.
A Warrior Princess? Greek Goddess?
A close-up of my favorite of the day
We also walked up to the Long Point Lighthouse in Crow Head, NL.

We returned to our campsite just as it started to rain. The weather forecast is calling for rain through Monday. We’ll have to find some indoor adventures. πŸ™‚

  1. That last berg looked like a spinx. What a hike. Well you certainly have different scenery than at home. Just breath taking
