Our stay in Fancy Gap, VA, assured us that the seasons were changing, requiring use of our furnace inside the camper at night. We decided to go exploring and ended up in New River Trail State Park, an excellent decision because we were out of the wind and chilly air. We stopped for a look at Shot Tower, then parked at the Visitor Center and walked down to the river to see a portion of Foster Falls – a surprise to me, because instead of a thundering cascade of falling water, it turned out to be a gradual series of rock ledges which continued on past the trail we took. Still, very pretty. We then took an hour-long walk on the 57-mile paved/gravel trail, which took the same path as the old railway that ran parallel to the river. It is accessible to walkers, hikers, bicyclists and horsemen. Kayaks and canoes can be rented as well.

We left the park and drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where we discovered just how cold and windy the day actually was near our campground at Fancy Gap. The following morning (Sunday), there were little patches of ice on the ground.
Our final stop on this trip was at Jordan Lake, where we spent two nights, both being just chilly enough for a campfire.

As a “youngster” I went to Camp in the summer near Fancy Gap! Beautiful scenery, but nights were chilly!
