Colorado to Wyoming to Utah to Nevada – 6/7/24 – 6/9/24

We left Estes Park and drove to Rock Springs, Wyoming, spending just one night at this campground and doing a little bit of laundry (we were just 75 steps from their very well-maintained facilities).   From there, we drove through part of Utah, then stopped for the night in West Wendover, Nevada, still on Mountain Time (the rest of the state is on Pacific Time).  Here, we had a very good dinner at the Paradise Grill in the Montego Bay Hotel Casino Resort.  The next day, we were back on I-80 and spent the night in Winnemucca, Nevada, which is named after the Paiute Chief Winnemucca.   The chief’s daughter, Sarah, was an advocate for the rights of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes, as well as an interpreter, messenger and scout for the US army, and, finally, an author.  The town is also known for having the largest Basque community in the US, and some may remember from the movie, Butch Cassidy and his gang robbed the local bank.  Now knowing its colorful history, I wish we had spent more time there.

This was a very tiring stretch!

This sign warned us of 40+ mph wind gusts.
Strong winds plus wide open spaces equal a tense drive at times, especially when large trucks are traveling much faster than we are.
Early evening at our campground in Rock Springs.  The brown fences divide the campsites (and probably block sand when winds are high).
Back on the road, with a drive filled with ever-changing landscapes (lots of pictures follow).
The changes in color and terrain were fascinating.
Here we are in Salt Lake, where we stopped to walk around and learn about the challenges facing the lake and, therefore, the entire city.
We were told that brine shrimp are the primary marine life that live in this water.
Coming into the Bonneville Salt Flats.  We experienced the mirage effect, seeing water in the distance that wasn’t really there at all.
It felt like we were on an entirely different planet!  Amazingly, high performance cars race in this – somehow.
Now we’re coming into Reno, Nevada.
No, we do not pull our camper going 80!

  1. Wow, winds at 40+, I’m having flashbacks to last year, but hey, it’s a great test to see if you rig is well balanced and hitch set properly 😵‍💫

I can’t believe Doug didn’t take the opportunity to see what speed he coule get on the salt flats! Where’s that adventuresome spirit?

I always felt like a snail in the road with the 80 mph speed limits.

Beautiful scenery, makes us so jealous and wanting to hit the road.
