Reminiscing in Tahoe

When we lived in California, we visited Lake Tahoe many times and in all four seasons.  We didn’t include a day trip there in our itinerary this time, but on the spur of the moment, Doug suggested we drive over from our campground in Reno.  I’ll keep my descriptions brief in this photographic trip down memory lane.

The Truckee Hotel, built in 1873, where we spent a cold and snowy weekend back in the late 1990’s.
The town, founded in 1844, was named after a Paiute Indian chief who guided pioneers through the Sierra.  It is located about 15 miles NW of Lake Tahoe and is known as one of the snowiest cities in the US.

Truckee has become a very popular tourist destination, and this gas station is making the most of that fact.
North Tahoe
We stayed at this beautiful B&B one summer weekend.
This is typical of views seen from the Rubicon Trail in D.L. Bliss State Park.  It is one of our favorite hikes and one of the longest we’ve ever taken.  Unfortunately, the park was closed for maintenance during this visit.
We stayed at Norfolk Woods several times.  Doug liked their “build your own fire in the fireplace” policy in their dining room.  This, too, is now closed for renovations.
Across the street from the Inn and down the road is this park, which was great for cross-country skiing.
Continuing our drive, heading for South Lake Tahoe.
I love a sale, but these were a little out of my budget.  🙂
We stopped here for lunch, just as we did many years ago.  Still great food and beautiful views of the lake.
The view from our table

After lunch, we drove through South Lake Tahoe for a look at Caesar’s, where we attended concerts and spent weekends. Alas, more change – it’s now Bally’s Lake Tahoe.

This was the perfect place for us to bring visitors, since we could rent a condo, cook most of our meals, and have everyone together.
We took a drive up to see the slopes – the last time we were here, we nearly froze while watching a snowboarding competition.
Too steep for me!
On to views of Emerald Bay and Fannette Island,
as well as Eagle Falls
One last look from Inspiration Point

Tomorrow (6/12), we’ll drive to Groveland, CA, and spend six days in Yosemite National Park.  There will be lots of pictures, so I’ll post a day-by-day photo journal.

    1. We’ll be continuing to keep you both in our hearts as we travel around our collective “stomping grounds.”
