After an overnight stop back in Reno, we went to the western town of Lone Pine, CA, where movies have been filmed since the 1920’s.  The rocks that have served as the set for over 400 movies and tv shows form the Alabama Hills between Lone Pine and Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  With Death Valley as its neighbor to the southeast, one thinks of extreme temperatures, but while we were there, a breeze was always blowing, making our stay very pleasant at the well-maintained Boulder Creek RV Resort.

Getting back to Lone Pine, we planned our next day, starting with a stop at the Museum of Western Film History, the full name of which I believe is the Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum of Lone Pine History, a more fitting name since scenes from more recent movies such as Star Trek V and VII, Tremors, and Django Unchained were filmed here.

Next on our list was a drive through the Alabama Hills via Movie Road, where there are a few markers to indicate what was filmed where, but the otherworldly rock formations give plenty of clues as to the possibilities.

Of course, we were hungry by this time, so we stopped in town for lunch.  I also included a pic of our all-time-high fill-up from the previous day.  🙂
