Page, AZ – 6/25-30

Our drive from Vegas to Page, AZ, was beautiful and fascinating, with the different shapes and colors along the highway.

Yes, this looks odd, but I took this as we were driving over the bridge at the Glen Canyon Dam – the Colorado River is below.
This is the view from our camper at Roam Horseshoe Bend Campground.   Every site here is beautifully landscaped, the facilities are new, immaculate, and upscale in design, the swimming pool is well maintained, etc.  We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in this area.
We didn’t stay at the campsite too long, though, with Horseshoe Bend just minutes away.
Yes, it’s windy and hot.
Time to get back to the camper
Tomorrow, we’ll go into town and make a reservation for a slot canyon tour.
The big question here is:Β  What time is it??Β  As explained by “AZ Central,”
“Arizona effectively has two time zones.
Arizona is in the Mountain Standard Time zone, and most of the state does not observe daylight saving time. However, the Navajo Nation, in the northeastern part of the state, does observe daylight saving time. It follows Mountain Daylight Time from March through November when daylight saving time is in effect.”Β
I read that this is because their land spans across several other states who do observe daylight saving time.Β
It gets even more confusing here in Page, which is minutes away from Utah.Β  When exploring around Lake Powell, some of the time you’re in Arizona, and sometimes you’re in Utah.Β

On Wednesday, we drove over to The Hub, as recommended by the office staff here in the campground.Β Β  The Page Chamber of Commerce is housed here, also, and we ended up talking with a staff member who (here comes another small-world story) used to live in Rochester, NY, worked at Gannett Newspapers, and knew a friend of ours who also worked there.Β  After answering our questions about a slot canyon tour, she booked our reservation for Friday.Β  Respecting the fact that we’d be on Navajo territory, we asked what time we needed to arrive for the tour.Β  She was most helpful in clarifying what time we should arrive.Β

Before we get to the slot canyon tour, here are some pix showing how we spent our time between Wednesday and Friday.

We crossed the Glen Canyon Dam and took a drive to the beach at Lake Powell,
stopping en route to check out one of the marinas on the lake.
Another windy day πŸ™‚
Wading in Lake Powell
We were not far from The Lone Rock.
Going back to the parking area, I captured a different view of the Rock.
Of course we’re hungry!  Lunch at Lake Powell Resort Lodge
Back at our campsite, we watched hikers on the Mesa adjacent to the campground.
The sun is setting.
Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy.   We’ll see.

Oh, yes, it did rain!Β

We’re looking forward to our tour tomorrow.

We were at the Antelope Slot Canyons tour site well in advance of boarding our air conditioned van.  Our guide, Bernice, not only knew the history of the land, she knew how to coax that van/bus through the sand, mud, and rocks to get us to the Upper Antelope slot canyon.  Here are some pix.

The sunlight coming through the ridges bounces back at the camera, creating different colors.
Back to reality.
(I could have posted dozens more.)
Coming out of the canyon, we had an uphill walk through sand, then a series of mounted platforms, then stairs back to the entrance.
These cows greeted us on cue.  πŸ™‚
Back at our campsite, a beautiful sunset.
On Saturday, our last full day in Page, we took the short hike (1.5 mi. RT) to The Hanging Garden.
It was very, very hot in spite of the breeze.
Getting closer …
Ahhh, cool shade
I spotted a lizard on our way down the trail.
He crawled out of his hiding place, and Doug got this close-up.  Apparently, he had a very large breakfast!
A close-up of Lake Powell from the trail
Doug took these pix for me of this plant about to bloom – identification TBD
Once again, lunch time!
A final drive around Lake Powell
We got back to our campsite just as a dust storm blew through.

.

Finally, it cleared.  Tomorrow, we head to the mountains and Flagstaff.

  1. Fantastic!!! Makes us want to go back. The lake looks really low compared to when we were there a few years ago. Beautiful photos, Slot Canyon is spectacular. Have a safe trip down to Flagstaff. The day we left Wahweap it was nice and we had snow before we got to Flagstaff…interesting drive that day 😎

    1. SNOW??!! Doug just read that they get over 100 inches per year here. Tonight it’s raining, which we hope will put out the fire not too far from here. We had smoke for awhile this afternoon. Hope to go to Lowell Observatory later this week. Hugs, m&d
