Flagstaff – 6/30 (Day 1)

What a difference a couple of hours, a couple hundred miles, and a couple thousand+ feet in altitude make!!   It was so pleasant walking around Flagstaff today, and by early evening, I dug out my denim shirt to put on over my t-shirt!  Tonight we have light rain, which is much needed.

We did a fair amount of exploring this afternoon, first stopping at the Visitors’ Center, then lunch at “Altitudes” (our server let me sample their house-made guacamole before deciding on their street tacos; Doug had a Korean chicken sandwich), then we drove up to the Lowell Observatory, which we hope to tour later this week.  Our next stop took us through part of the Coconino National Forest up to Snowbowl Ski Center and the trailhead for Mt. Humphrey (12,633 ft. and the highest natural peak in Arizona).  As we took pictures at the trailhead, a group of young people came down the trail assisting their companion, who clearly was in need of medical help.  Just then, the fire truck, ambulance, and medics arrived.  I overheard one of the medics mention the altitude – they put the young woman on a stretcher and took her to the hospital.  A reminder to be extra cautious in our outdoor activities.

Back at our campsite, the sun has gone behind Mt. Elden, which is adjacent to our campground and visible from our site.
