The Grand Mesa is the largest flat top mountain in the world (approx. 500 sq. mi.), with over 300 lakes, Powderhorn Ski Resort, and an elevation of over 11,000 ft. We drove through part of the park from the entrance at Delta to Powderhorn Ski Resort, and that filled up our afternoon.
The Grand Mesa is so large that it won’t fit into the camera frame and still be visible. We noticed the lack of leaves on many of the Aspens. This could be a result of a lack of water, unusually high temperatures, or a fungal disease.
Our drive included a heavy rain as we arrived at the Visitor Center, plus a frantic family looking for a 14-year-old member of their group who went off on her own and hadn’t been seen for over three hours. So, along with an eye on the scenery, we kept an eye out for this young lady.
The rain stopped, and the beautiful vistas came into view..I thought the Mesa was flat! πThe resort averages 250″ of snow each year.Once again, we stopped for lunch. Our server told us winter could possibly arrive next month.View from our table
After lunch, we continued our drive.
Island LakeWe stopped to take a walk along Ward Lake. A full day at high altitude – so far, no alerts came into our phones about a missing child. Hopefully, she returned to her family’s campsite.0Driving back to the campground along Hwy. 65 in Eckert, we saw this creamery where Challenge Butter was made from 1911 until the 1980’s. It is now an antiques shop.By the time we arrived at our camper, it was too late to start cooking dinner, so we walked over to this restaurant.Β We had our first introduction to Burnt Ends, which are not burned and are very tender little bites of beef.Β We had a very interesting conversation with our server, who told us about her experiences with forest fires when she lived in Ft. Collins, CO.
The end of the day is approaching, and still no alerts via phone or in the news.Β Hopefully, all is well.
Tomorrow (Sunday), we’ll go back to Grand Junction, with the following plans for Monday:Β get truck serviced, do six loads of laundry, get hair cut.Β π
Such beautiful scenery!! When are you planning to return home? You will have so much to tell we will have to have several lunches!!
