An Unplanned Detour – 6/30 – ?

During our travels in mid-June, Doug experienced a problem with the vision in his right eye, so we made an appointment with the office of our former eye doctor in Rochester.  (We had planned to camp in the Adirondacks, so we were already near the area.)   Doug was diagnosed with a vitreous separation in his right eye, though he was given the OK to continue travel; however, he was cautioned to get immediate care should his vision change in that eye.  Unfortunately, that became a reality towards the end of June, so we decided the best thing to do would be to drive back for another appointment in Rochester.  (Sitting on the shore of Lake Champlain in Vermont, we could see New York on the other side!)

To make a very long story short, Doug is now recovering from a “detached retina with giant tear.”  Doug’s brother Geoff and wife Kathy have generously provided their guest room and home so that we’re not sitting in a hotel room dealing with all of this.  Camping would be out of the question right now, given the movement and lifting restrictions during Doug’s recovery.  The doctors anticipate an 80-90% return in his vision over the next several months.   He’ll be going to Duke for follow-up care after we’re home.

Thanks to everyone who followed our travels once again.  We have loved all of your comments and knowing you’re with us in spirit.  Hugs to all of you!

  1. So sorry you had to detour from your trip, but thankful you were not parked in a campground somewhere, when Doug’s vision changed! Prayers for his healing!
