Miami & Coconut Grove – January 20 thru ??

Our traveling companions for several miles in the Atlantic.

Miami skyline entering Government Cut into the Port of Miami.  We shared the channel with a variety of ships.

The 2016 Sailing World Cup is being held right here in Biscayne Bay.  Many of the 800 sailors gathered here in Coconut Grove will walk in the opening ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics. We have been on a mooring ball and a dock at Dinner Key Marina for the past week and have seen the competition up close — VERY close — while on the mooring.
While at our dock, the coaches’ dinghies, marked with flags from all over the world, are tied up not far from our stern.

A short explanation as to why we moved to a dock:  (1) winds gusting to over 40 mph this past weekend – there are 225 mooring balls in this marina alone, and we were on #146, quite a way out from shore and very exposed;  (2) a battery bank which powers our inverter was not functioning properly – the dockmaster put us in touch with a marine electrician who fixed the problem (including replacement of two batteries which had failed), and one “boat buck”  later, things are rewired and all five batteries are fully charged ~~ sigh …
We will now be able to spend time at anchor in the Keys with full power for electronics and appliances.
The winds have been brisk for the World Cup.

Miami at night from our mooring.

The CocoWalk – an inviting plaza filled with upscale shops, restaurants, theaters,
accented with beautiful artwork and landscaping.  We finally saw Star Wars here in the 14-screen luxury movie theater.
