Asheville KOA West – Exploring Cherokee, NC 10/15

We left Devil’s Fork and checked into the KOA West Asheville on Thursday, 10/14. We planned a full day for Friday 10/15 in Cherokee, driving back to the campsite via the Blue Ridge Parkway. Since there was so much to see, I will add minimal text to the many pictures that follow, which show a small portion of what we saw. The museum was well attended, and mask mandates were enforced.

The Trail of Tears

Moving ahead to modern-day life, below is artwork from Jeff Edwards.

Leaving the museum, we drove up to Oconaluftee Indian Village, where a guide took us through the outdoor exhibits.

In closing the program, we learned there is no word for “goodbye” in Cherokee; instead, their parting word is “donadagohvi”, which means “until we meet again.”

We left Cherokee and found our way to a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway we haven’t seen before, which includes the highest elevation on the Parkway.

Doug took this shot which shows so perfectly how these mountains got their name.
Scoping out the next shot ….
Soon we were driving through low-lying clouds as the sun was starting to set. What a gorgeous drive!
