The White Mountains – 7/8-7/10

We’re camped for the next five days on the Ammonoosuc River. Just a few steps from our campsite is a nature trail that takes you to the water’s edge – or – in another direction, in just 75 steps from our campsite we can enjoy the serenity from a picnic bench. The water is shallow, sparkling, and crystal clear.

After breakfast, we drove south to the town of Lincoln.

We then headed east on the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112, the first of the Northeast’s National Scenic Byways). Below are some of the beautiful sights along the way. But First: a little bit of history 🙂

Driving north on Bear Notch Road, we stopped at the first viewing area.

I took this while standing on top of a large rock – no signage, but I think it’s Bear Mountain (3,206’)
The Willey House

The story: In 1826, a massive landslide occurred during a storm, killing Samuel and Polly Willey, their five children, and two hired men. 
The family fled their home, running into the path of the landslide, while the house was spared.

The last stop – Super Secret Ice Cream in Bethlehem, NH (the highest town in NH)
This ice cream lived up to the review I read in Yankee Magazine last year.

Friday (7/10) became errand day (at least the entire morning), but after lunch we drove over to Mt. Washington – not to drive up, not to take the cog railway, but just to look.

We continued on to our campground. Burgers on the grill tonight.

This end of the Ammonoosuc is more our speed.

  1. What a great way to start our anniversary morning with coffee and great trip photos! This looks like a place we would love to go. We did notice that none of the gray haired guys jumping into the water were Doug…what’s up with that? 🤣

    Beautiful photos, we can almost hear the waterfalls. Giving us the wanderlust already.

      As for jumping off of rocks, even if we were 50 years younger you’d not find me (can’t speak for Mr. Smith) doing that 🙂
