Key West Reflections (as we depart)

The Grotto at St. Mary’s (pictured below), was built in 1922 by Sister Louis Gabriel, who stated “As long as the Grotto stands, Key West will never experience the full brunt of a hurricane.”
(There has not been a severe storm on the island since its construction.)

The Mariana is on display outside Mel Fisher’s Maritime Heritage Museum.  It arrived on the shores of Key West from Cuba on August 3, 2015, carrying 23 men and 1 woman.  If you can key on “Voyage to Freedom” and read the full story,
it is well worth the time to do so.  Regardless of your feelings on the immigration issue, this vessel is a stark reminder that there are many who do not enjoy the freedom we may take for granted here in this country.
